In a bid to align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent austerity campaign, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis showcased a symbolic gesture by riding a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle from his residence to the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai, accompanied by cultural affairs minister Ashish Shelar. Other ministers, including Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, opted for electric vehicles (EVs), while some walked to the cabinet meeting. This initiative followed the announcement of several austerity measures aimed at reducing government expenditures, such as halving ministerial convoys and banning overseas travel. However, the move has faced criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that such actions are merely superficial and question their long-term commitment to austerity. Fadnavis defended his actions, stating that leaders should set an example for citizens. Despite the push for EVs, concerns were raised regarding the lack of charging infrastructure for long-distance travel.
