Gautam Gambhir, head coach of the Indian cricket team, has expressed strong support for the ICC's recent decision to trial the use of pink balls in day Test matches. This initiative aims to maximize playtime in conditions of anticipated bad light. The rule, effective from October 1, allows matches to commence with a red ball, switching to a pink ball if light conditions deteriorate. Gambhir views this as a crucial opportunity for teams to achieve results, especially with the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in mind, where matches in Guwahati and Ranchi could face early sunset challenges. He stated, "If there's an opportunity to get a result, you should always have that opportunity," underscoring the potential impact on qualification for the World Test Championship final. While acknowledging the adjustment difficulties players may face, Gambhir remains optimistic about the positive reception of this change, emphasizing the need for flexibility in critical matches.
