In an effort to enhance constitutional awareness among youth, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a ₹1 crore initiative to introduce structured lessons on the Indian Constitution for students in Classes 8 to 10. This program will be implemented across 247 civic-run schools in Mumbai, benefiting over 44,000 students who will receive copies of the Constitution in Marathi, Hindi, English, and Urdu. The BMC plans to prioritize the printing of Marathi editions. To facilitate regular engagement with the Constitution, a daily reading slot of 30 minutes to one hour will be added to school timetables. Topics covered will include the structure and functioning of government, fundamental rights, and citizens’ duties. Prabhakar Shinde, chairman of the standing committee, noted that this initiative is a first-of-its-kind effort envisioned by leaders of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), aimed at ensuring students actively engage with the Constitution and internalize its values from an early age.
