Transport Scotland has announced a significant £1.94 billion framework agreement aimed at completing the dualling of the A9 road between Perth and Inverness. This project, which encompasses the final 58 miles of the 80-mile route, is expected to be finished by 2035, a decade later than originally planned. The framework is part of a broader £4 billion investment in the A9, which is comparable to the £1.35 billion cost of the Queensferry Crossing. The initial contract will focus on a 15-mile stretch between Dalraddy and Slochd, including enhancements to junctions near Aviemore. The Scottish Government has opted for traditional funding methods after abandoning earlier plans for private financing. In response to industry feedback, Transport Scotland aims to involve contractors early in the process to improve project design and reduce costs. Construction is already underway on other sections of the A9, with completion dates set for 2028 for certain areas. So far, only ten miles of new dualling have been completed since the last major upgrade over 40 years ago.
