In a tragic incident in Surapet, Chennai, two men were arrested for the murder of a 70-year-old woman, Ponnammal, who was found strangled in her home after being tied up. The crime occurred on Thursday night, with the suspects stealing jewellery valued at ₹5 lakh (approximately $6,000 USD). The situation came to light when relatives, suspecting something was amiss after the suspects' autorickshaw was involved in a minor accident, checked on Ponnammal and discovered her unconscious. Police were alerted by her daughter, Gejalakshmi, leading to a swift investigation. Ponnammal, who had been living alone since her husband's death in 2006, had recently sold a family property and distributed the proceeds among her daughters. CCTV footage revealed that the suspects entered her home at 7:45 PM and left an hour later. The arrested men, Palani, a local broker, and Thulasidas, an autorickshaw driver, had conspired to rob her, believing she had cash at home. However, they found no cash and resorted to murder. The stolen jewellery has been recovered, and both suspects are currently in judicial custody as investigations continue.
