In March, construction commenced on a $14 million apartment complex by the New Community Shelter in Green Bay, Wisconsin, designed to aid individuals overcoming homelessness. This facility will feature 41 single apartments, providing a private living space for those who have participated in the shelter's rehabilitation programs since its inception in 1994. CEO Terri Refsguard emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment to prevent residents from returning to homelessness. The complex will offer green spaces and fitness areas, along with access to case managers who help residents set and achieve personal goals. Currently, the New Community Shelter operates three living areas, including an emergency shelter accommodating up to 98 individuals and transitional apartments for those with income. The shelter also serves meals to around 200 community members nightly, ensuring no one goes without food. Refsguard believes that while ending homelessness is a significant challenge, progress can be made one person at a time.
