Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced a special Parliament session from April 16 to 18, 2024, aimed at finalizing the rules and implementation modalities for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. This historic legislation, passed in 2023, provides for 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies, addressing a long-standing demand dating back to 1996. Khandu emphasized that women's participation in policymaking is crucial for development, noting that developed nations have 40-50% women representation, compared to India's current 13.6% in the Lok Sabha and 9% in State Assemblies. He urged women to actively engage in political leadership beyond the reservation quota, underscoring the legislation's potential to empower women and contribute to India's vision for a developed nation by 2047. Additionally, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) expressed concerns regarding the proposed national delimitation, fearing it could undermine Assam's unique political identity and elevate North Indian dominance in national politics.
