The incident occurred during the 'Star-Bound' performance when the drones malfunctioned due to an unforeseen change in the radio frequency environment. As a result, many drones enacted failsafe landing procedures, causing them to plummet into the water, which was captured in videos shared online. SkyMagic, the operator of the drones, stated that the issue was not detected during pre-flight checks but arose mid-flight. In response, the pilot team executed a stop command to stabilize the drones in the air and initiated a return-to-home protocol for those unaffected. Vivid Sydney has canceled the subsequent shows scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday to facilitate a thorough assessment of the incident. The organizers emphasized that public safety is their primary concern and expressed regret for the disappointment caused to attendees.
