Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) revealed that Jackie and Shadow's chicks, named Sandy and Luna, are a female and male, respectively. The eaglets hatched in early April and were named on May 1 after a public naming contest. FOBBV determined the chicks' genders through vocal pitch analysis, noting that female bald eagles have lower-pitched voices due to their larger size. The chicks are expected to fledge, or leave the nest, between mid-June and mid-July, facing numerous challenges such as predation from other birds of prey and harsh weather conditions. Historically, only about 70% of eaglets survive this critical stage. Jackie and Shadow, who have been nesting together since 2018, have had a tumultuous nesting history, including unsuccessful hatches in 2023 and 2024. Environmental groups are currently fundraising $10 million to protect the eagles' foraging area from development, highlighting the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of these iconic birds.
