On Saturday, the Jammu & Kashmir government assumed control of 58 private schools associated with the proscribed Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its education trust, the Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT). This action follows an earlier directive to take over over 200 schools in the region, which has caused friction between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor's administration. The Jamaat-e-Islami was banned by the Indian government in 2019 as an unlawful association. In 2022, the Lieutenant Governor's administration barred the FAT from operating educational institutions, citing a historical order from 1990 that had previously banned the Trust. The FAT was established in 1972 and claimed to be a non-political entity focused on education. The ongoing management of these schools will now be overseen by principals from nearby government schools.
