In Tamil Nadu, the seat matrix for undergraduate medical programs in government colleges is expected to remain unchanged this year, totaling 13,000 seats. The state had 78 institutions in 2025, including government and private colleges, with 5,050 seats in state-run colleges. While private institutions are seeking to increase their intake, officials from the state selection committee will finalize the seat matrix after the National Medical Commission reviews proposals. State Health Minister Ma Subramanian has stated a policy to establish one government medical college in each district and has sought permission for six new colleges. However, the Indian Medical Association and Tamil Nadu Government Doctors' Association are urging the government to reconsider the opening of new colleges, emphasizing that Tamil Nadu currently has one doctor for nearly 700 people, which is better than the WHO's recommendation of one for 1,000. They argue that the focus should shift towards increasing postgraduate and super-specialty seats instead of merely expanding MBBS seats.
