The Maharashtra government has sanctioned ₹10 crore (approximately $1.2 million USD) for the renovation of the Kipling Bungalow, a historic structure located within the Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai. Built in 1882, the bungalow served as the residence for the school's deans until 2007 and was constructed to replace the original house where the famed author Rudyard Kipling was born in 1865. The renovation will focus on structural maintenance and restoring original features such as its teakwood construction, verandas, and bedrooms. Additionally, the project will develop an art gallery and improve the site's landscaping and architectural illumination, adhering to heritage preservation norms. Kiran Kulkarni, the state cultural affairs secretary, confirmed that the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums will oversee the conservation work. Previous proposals for the bungalow included transforming it into a tourist attraction and a literary venue, featuring an art museum and a virtual reality experience based on Kipling's The Jungle Book.
