In response to escalating violence following the assembly election results in West Bengal, Kolkata police have banned rallies involving earthmovers and bulldozers. This decision comes after allegations that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters vandalized shops and attacked the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party office in Kolkata's New Market area. Since the announcement of election results on May 4, over 1,500 arrests have been made statewide, with 80 arrests occurring in Kolkata alone. Police commissioner Ajay Nand stated that legal action will be taken against those organizing rallies with heavy machinery, and such vehicles will be seized. The police have registered more than 200 First Information Reports (FIRs) and have launched a special drive to recover weapons and prevent further violence. The Election Commission of India has deployed around 2,400 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to maintain peace, with 500 companies remaining in the state until further notice. This situation follows allegations of significant post-poll violence in the 2021 elections, which prompted a Calcutta High Court investigation.
