A study by researchers from Finland shows that bumblebees can solve complex problems independently, demonstrating cognitive abilities previously thought limited to larger-brained animals. The bees successfully manipulated objects to access rewards, indicating significant cognitive flexibility.
- 01Bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) demonstrated the ability to solve a novel object-manipulation task independently.
- 02In a test, bees rolled a ball to access a reward hidden under a flower, showcasing their problem-solving skills.
- 03Out of 30 bees, 23 successfully rolled the ball into the correct compartment, indicating goal-directed behavior.
- 04The study challenges previous beliefs that spontaneous problem-solving is exclusive to larger-brained vertebrates.
- 05Researchers emphasize that while bees exhibit cognitive complexity, they do not think like humans.

A recent study conducted by researchers from Finland's University of Oulu, University of Helsinki, and University of Turku reveals that bumblebees possess significant cognitive abilities, enabling them to solve novel problems. In a series of experiments, bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) were tasked with manipulating a ball to access a reward hidden beneath a blue artificial flower. Remarkably, the bees demonstrated spontaneous problem-solving behavior without prior training, successfully completing the task in various scenarios. Out of 22 bees tested, 16 were able to roll the ball through an opening to reach the flower. In another trial, 23 out of 30 bees correctly identified the hidden compartment containing the reward. This study challenges the long-held belief that complex problem-solving is limited to larger-brained vertebrates, suggesting that even small-brained insects can exhibit cognitive flexibility. While the findings do not imply that bees think like humans, they underscore the need to reconsider our understanding of insect intelligence. The research was published in the journal Science, highlighting the cognitive complexities of insects, which constitute a significant portion of Earth's biodiversity.
