The Telangana government, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has proposed a significant initiative to offer free travel on the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) suburban trains in Hyderabad starting June 2, 2023. This proposal is aimed at alleviating the increasing congestion on city roads by encouraging more residents to opt for public transport. Currently, the MMTS network operates about 88 services daily, carrying approximately 40,000-45,000 passengers. The initiative, if approved by the Railway Board, will allow all commuters to travel for free, contrasting with the existing free bus travel scheme that only benefits women under the Maha Lakshmi initiative. The state government plans to reimburse the South Central Railway (SCR) for ticket revenue, estimated at around ₹10 crore (roughly $1.2 million USD) annually, regardless of passenger increases. While the proposal has garnered positive feedback, concerns about overcrowding and the need for improved infrastructure have been raised. Experts emphasize that the success of this initiative will depend on effective execution, including coordination between the state and railway authorities, and enhancements in service frequency and connectivity with other transport modes.
