As part of the Census operations for 2027, over 26 lakh (2.6 million) households in India have already taken advantage of the self-enumeration facility, according to the Registrar General of India (RGI). This digital initiative, which began on April 16, aims to enhance participation and streamline the data collection process. The first phase, known as the House Listing and Housing Census (HLO), involves listing all structures and households across various states and Union territories. Citizens can provide their details online, generating a special ID for verification during field visits by enumerators. The enumerators will ask 33 questions regarding basic household facilities and ownership status during their visits. The entire exercise is set to be fully digital, utilizing a mobile application for data collection. The second phase of the Census is expected to commence next year.
