In a recent effort to combat the ecological issues caused by dog waste, volunteers and staff from Friends of the Fells collected 114 pounds of dog feces during a two-hour event known as 'PoopBlitz' at the Middlesex Fells Reservation in Medford, Massachusetts. This initiative involved nine volunteers who documented 152 instances of waste, with less than 25% of it being bagged for proper disposal. According to Maddie Morgan, the field programs manager, the widespread littering of dog waste poses significant ecological risks, including altering soil and water chemistry and spreading diseases among pets and wildlife. To address this problem, Friends of the Fells has implemented two pilot pet waste stations in high-traffic areas and plans to use the data from this collection to determine where additional stations are needed. This project is part of the 'Be Kind!' campaign, aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership and protecting the natural environment.
