Uttar Pradesh, India, has seen a significant increase in ethanol production, rising 23% to 2.23 billion litres for the 2024-25 season, up from 1.8 billion litres in the previous year. This surge is crucial as India aims to enhance ethanol blending in petrol from 20% to 25%, which has already helped the country save 45 million barrels of crude oil annually, translating to a foreign exchange saving of nearly ₹4.5 trillion. The state's robust agricultural sector, particularly in sugarcane cultivation, supports this growth. Currently, sugarcane is grown across 2.97 million hectares, benefiting 4.8 million farm households. The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) in Amethi district is also advancing renewable energy technologies, which could attract up to ₹60,000 crore in private investments over the next five years. The agricultural sector's growth is vital for Uttar Pradesh's ambition to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030, with improved farming practices contributing to increased sugarcane yields from 72 tonnes to 84 tonnes per hectare over the last nine years.
