An outbreak of hantavirus has emerged on the Dutch-flagged luxury cruise ship MV Hondius, which is currently sailing off the coast of West Africa. Since the outbreak began, eight cases have been reported, leading to three deaths among passengers. The ship, which embarked from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, is carrying 147 passengers and crew who are now isolated in their cabins as a precautionary measure. The vessel is on a three- to four-day journey from Cape Verde to the Canary Islands, where Spanish authorities are prepared to assist. Health officials are also monitoring 30 former passengers who disembarked on April 24, prior to the outbreak being identified. Despite the seriousness of the situation onboard, health experts, including those from the World Health Organization, have indicated that the risk to the wider public remains low, drawing comparisons to the earlier COVID-19 pandemic experiences but emphasizing that this outbreak is expected to remain relatively contained.
