On Tuesday, Haryana surpassed its wheat procurement target of 75 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), achieving 76.57 LMT with the rabi marketing season set to conclude on May 15. The state's e-kharid portal reported total arrivals at 82.72 LMT. Farmers attribute this success to the adoption of high-yielding varieties and favorable weather conditions, as noted by Ratan Tiwari, Director at the ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research. Last year, Haryana procured 72.41 LMT out of 75.61 LMT total arrivals, demonstrating a significant increase this season. Currently, 68% of the procured grain has been lifted, with payments of ₹10,863 crore disbursed to 520,804 farmers. Sirsa topped the procurement list with 9.19 LMT, while Karnal and Jind followed closely. However, officials warn that the high procurement levels could lead to storage challenges, prompting the identification of additional storage space and requests for special rakes to manage the surplus.
