Starting January 1, 2027, only electric three-wheelers will be registered in Delhi, with neighboring cities like Gurugram and Faridabad following suit from January 1, 2028. This initiative aims to combat air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region, which has been attributed to various emission sources.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has mandated that only electric three-wheelers will be registered in Delhi starting January 1, 2027. This directive aims to significantly reduce air pollution in the region, which is facing severe challenges from various emission sources, including transportation, biomass burning, and industrial activities. Following Delhi's lead, cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) such as Gurugram, Faridabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Sonipat will implement the same regulation beginning January 1, 2028, with the entire NCR transitioning by January 1, 2029. In a related move, the CAQM has announced that as of October 1, 2023, no fuel will be provided to vehicles lacking a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. During the Clean Air Dialogues, CAQM chairperson Rajesh Verma highlighted the complexity of air pollution in the Delhi-NCR area. He also urged the governments of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh to develop rigorous action plans aimed at completely eliminating paddy stubble burning by the 2026 harvest season, further contributing to the region's air quality improvement efforts.
