Athletes like Avery Poppinga have reported spending nearly $50,000 annually on training, travel, and equipment, leading her to join OnlyFans in 2024 for additional income. In February 2025, she secured a sponsorship deal with OFTV, the platform’s safe-for-work division, which includes social media promotion and branded merchandise. The trend reflects a larger movement, as OnlyFans now collaborates with around 285 athletes across various niche sports, aiming to provide financial support where traditional sponsorships are lacking. Fellow beach volleyball player Falyn Fonoimoana shared her experience of managing multiple jobs while raising a child, underscoring the economic challenges in the sport despite its Olympic popularity. While some face criticism due to the platform's adult content association, athletes argue that their involvement with OnlyFans can enhance visibility for their sport. Poppinga stated, “Our sport needs a lot more exposure,” emphasizing the potential benefits of drawing attention through unconventional means.
