Early on May 4, 2023, a section of the 4.7-kilometre-long Vikramshila Setu bridge, which connects Bhagalpur and Naugachia in Bhagalpur district, Bihar, collapsed into the Ganga river. The incident occurred around 12:50 am near pillar number 133, but thankfully, no casualties were reported. Following the collapse, Bhagalpur District Magistrate Nawal Kishor Choudhary confirmed that all vehicles and individuals were promptly evacuated from the area. Traffic on both sides of the bridge has been blocked, and residents have been advised to use alternate routes via Munger. An expert engineering committee has been tasked with investigating the cause of the collapse, particularly in light of previous concerns regarding the bridge's deteriorating condition. In March, a video surfaced showing the bridge's protection walls in poor shape, prompting the then Road Construction Minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal to announce plans for reconstruction.
