On March 7, a surgical error at the Trauma Centre of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU) occurred when a 71-year-old patient, Radhika Devi, was mistakenly operated on instead of an 82-year-old with the same name. The orthopaedics team began the procedure on the wrong patient due to a name mismatch between Radhika Devi, 71, in neurosurgery and Radhika Devi, 82, in orthopaedics. The surgery was halted when normal bone tissue was discovered during the incision. The correct spinal surgery was performed on March 18, but the 82-year-old patient later developed severe complications, including respiratory distress, leading to her death on March 27. Her grandson, Mrityunjay Pal, filed a complaint alleging that the initial surgery caused severe health issues and that the hospital staff was unhelpful. In response, IMS-BHU director Professor S.N. Sankhwar stated that a committee is investigating the incident, with a report expected within ten days. The inquiry aims to determine accountability for this serious error.
