Delays in the Defence Investment Plan (DIP) have raised concerns among UK Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding the nation's military credibility with allies. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) highlighted that the DIP, initially expected in autumn, will now be published before a NATO summit. This postponement could lead to higher procurement costs and hinder the modernization of the Armed Forces. Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, chair of the PAC, stated that the UK has lacked a credible military capability plan for years, criticizing the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for not providing sufficient transparency regarding its nuclear expenditures and the ongoing issues with the Ajax armoured vehicle. The PAC report noted that the MoD has spent 18% of its budget on nuclear deterrents, which is projected to rise. The report includes six recommendations for the MoD, including improving transparency on nuclear spending and addressing the delays in the DIP. The MoD responded by stating it has signed over 1,400 major defence contracts since July 2024 and is committed to increasing defence spending significantly.
