The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has launched Operation WIPE (Web-based Illicit Activities Prevention & Enforcement) to address the increasing threat of online drug trafficking in India. This operation is a proactive measure to monitor and disrupt illicit activities on digital platforms before drugs can be smuggled. Following the success of Operation MED-MAX in July 2025, which dismantled a transnational drug trafficking syndicate, the NCB aims to prevent the illegal sale of pharmaceutical drugs regulated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The agency has flagged 122 instances involving 62 substances, including commonly abused drugs such as clonazepam, diazepam, and fentanyl. Notices have been issued to various online platforms, prompting them to take corrective actions. Platforms like IndiaMART and TradeIndia have already suspended suspicious vendors and removed flagged products. The NCB's technical teams will continue to monitor online activities to identify emerging threats, marking a strategic shift towards preventive action against online drug trafficking.
