In Chandigarh, the Union Territory administration has launched a comprehensive cleaning drive in anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season. This initiative focuses on cleaning road gullies and stormwater drainage systems to mitigate the risk of flooding. Tenders have been issued for desilting road gullies and inspecting manhole chambers, particularly along major thoroughfares such as Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg, Transport Chowk, and Poultry Farm junction. A senior official from the UT administration noted that this proactive measure is a response to previous instances of heavy rainfall that led to significant waterlogging on roads. The official emphasized the importance of timely cleaning to minimize waterlogging, facilitate smooth traffic movement, and reduce public inconvenience during heavy rains. While acknowledging that the city’s drainage infrastructure is aging, officials maintain that it remains effective and that flooding events are typically short-lived. To support these efforts, residents are urged not to dispose of garbage in the drainage systems, which can hinder the cleaning process and exacerbate flooding risks during the monsoon.
