AirAsia has placed a landmark order for 150 Airbus A220-300 jets worth approximately $19 billion, making it the largest single order for this aircraft type. Announced at an Airbus factory in Mirabel, Quebec, the deal includes an option to increase the order to 300 jets, reflecting AirAsia's ambitions for future growth and efficiency. The A220 is designed to be more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, with a seating capacity of up to 160 passengers, making it suitable for smaller markets that were previously unprofitable. AirAsia's co-founder, Tony Fernandes, emphasized that this order aligns with the airline's strategy to reduce operating costs in a volatile fuel price environment. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2028, allowing AirAsia to optimize its existing fleet for mid and long-haul routes, thereby enhancing its service across Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. This significant order also boosts Airbus, bringing its total orders for the A220 beyond 1,000 jets.
