General Motors (GM) is proposing a plan to leverage its fleet of over 250,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on US roads as a power source for the electricity grid. This initiative aims to help utility companies manage the rising demand for electricity, which has reached historic levels due to the growth of AI data centers. GM's vice president of battery and sustainability, Kurt Kelty, emphasized the potential for EV batteries to provide electricity during peak demand times, potentially lowering utility bills for consumers. The company is advocating for a public-private collaboration involving utility agencies and automakers to streamline the process of allowing EV drivers to send power back to the grid. By utilizing bidirectional charging technology, GM envisions a future where EV owners can discharge power during high-demand periods and recharge their vehicles when electricity is cheaper. This concept could support approximately 120,000 homes for a week or power San Francisco for a day. GM is currently testing these 'vehicle-to-grid' programs with utility companies, aiming to reduce fossil fuel consumption and promote EV sales.
