The MIT Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS) is approaching its 60th anniversary, reflecting on its past while evolving to meet future urban challenges. The program, established in 1967, has significantly impacted urban planning education by hosting over 800 fellows from more than 130 countries. As it enters a new phase, SPURS is shifting its focus towards technology policy, aligning with MIT's strengths in technological innovation. This change aims to equip mid-career professionals from emerging nations with the skills to address urban development challenges using advanced technologies. Currently, SPURS hosts 13 fellows from various regions, including Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, who participate in interdisciplinary coursework and professional affiliations. The program's director, Bish Sanyal, emphasizes the importance of creating a diverse funding portfolio to secure its future. By fostering connections between fellows and U.S. organizations, SPURS facilitates collaborative projects, enhancing the fellows' professional growth and impact in their home countries. The initiative continues to nurture leaders who understand the complexities of urban issues and are committed to innovative solutions.
