On Monday, a powerful earthquake struck Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur, causing significant damage to six houses in Purok Sunflower, Barangay Bomba. The homeowners affected include Jocelyn Carin, Elizajane Benting, Linda Umban, Bernadette Calisang, and Vivian Calisang. Bernadette Calisang reported that her house, constructed in 2012 from light materials, collapsed and was swept away by waves after the sea receded suddenly. Her daughter, Gladys Calisang, swam to the site to recover important belongings, but the bridge leading to their home was also destroyed. Acting City Mayor Lance Samuel Co stated that the local government is currently inspecting public infrastructure for damage and will extend assistance to the affected families. Lawyer Ruel Halanes, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense, explained that the houses' collapse was due to the earthquake's ground shaking and the subsequent pullback of seawater, which was followed by strong waves. The local government is committed to supporting the affected families while ensuring public safety measures are in place.
