Peel Regional Police are set to provide an update regarding an investigation into a former Air Canada pilot who allegedly operated hundreds of flights without the necessary airline transport pilot licence. This update, scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, is part of a complex fraud investigation referred to as 'Project Icarus'. Air Canada has stated that the pilot, who was fully trained and held a valid commercial pilot licence, did not possess the required airline transport pilot licence under Canadian regulations. Upon discovering this discrepancy, Air Canada removed the pilot from active duty and reported the matter to Transport Canada. The airline emphasized that safety was not compromised, as its pilots undergo rigorous testing every six months and annual checks by certified Transport Canada check-pilots. Following an internal audit, Air Canada confirmed that there were no other instances of non-compliance among its pilots. The airline has refrained from providing further comments due to privacy laws and the ongoing investigation.
