In a tragic incident, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Joga Singh was shot dead by bike-borne gunmen near Majitha town in Amritsar district, Punjab, on Sunday morning. This marks the third murder of a police officer in Punjab since February 22, when two officers were killed at a police outpost in Gurdaspur district, close to the Pakistan border. Singh was en route to his shift when he was intercepted by the attackers, who shot him twice — once in the chest and once in the waist. Despite the attack occurring around 6 am on a quiet road, he succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive. Police are investigating the motive behind the murder, considering angles such as personal enmity and road rage. They are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the assailants. Singh's family described him as a dedicated officer with no known threats, highlighting the shock and confusion surrounding his death. After a postmortem, he will be cremated in his native village, Ghaniye-ke-Bangar, near Batala.
