Keralam Minister T Siddique announced that the Shigella outbreak in Wayanad is currently under control, following the identification of 339 symptomatic cases. Among these, two students, a four-and-a-half-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, have tested positive for Shigellosis. Health authorities are actively managing the situation by supervising 12 institutions linked to the cases and conducting investigations. A special chlorination drive for wells and water bodies is set to take place to mitigate further risks. Health Minister K Muraleedharan emphasized that a medical team from Kozhikode Medical College has been deployed to Wayanad to monitor the situation, with 21 patients receiving treatment at Sultan Bathery Taluk Headquarters Hospital. Fortunately, none of the patients are in serious condition. The outbreak has raised concerns, particularly following the death of a four-year-old girl from a related infection. Health officials continue to stress the importance of public awareness regarding the spread of the infection, which is typically transmitted through contaminated food or water.
