On Tuesday, the European Union proposed a sweeping visa ban on former combatants of the Russian armed forces and its proxy groups, as part of a significant sanctions package aimed at intensifying pressure on Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas announced that the bloc aims to prevent these individuals from entering Europe, stating that "Europe's door should not be open to Russia's (ex-)combatants." This sanctions package, which includes over 170 new listings, is designed to weaken Russia's military capabilities by targeting its financial sector, energy industry, and drone production network. Key measures include asset freezes on nearly 90 banks and transaction bans on over 30 banks, as well as restrictions on cryptocurrency services involving 11 platforms. Additionally, the EU plans to freeze the Russian oil price cap and impose new restrictions on liquefied natural gas tankers. The proposals will now be reviewed by EU member states before final adoption.
