On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved bemotrizinol as a new active ingredient in sunscreens, marking the first addition since the late 1990s. This ingredient provides protection against both ultraviolet A and B rays and is deemed safe for use by adults and children aged six months and older. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that this decision aims to foster innovation within the sunscreen market, enhancing competition and consumer confidence. The approval follows a report from the Trump administration's Make America Health Again Commission, which urged the FDA to improve regulatory processes for over-the-counter sunscreens. Bemotrizinol, submitted by DSM Nutritional Products, has shown no adverse reactions in clinical studies. DSM will market the ingredient under the brand name Parsol Shield for 18 months, after which other manufacturers can also produce it. The FDA advises applying sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours, especially when swimming or sweating.
