Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has called on parents to refrain from allowing their children to take a day off school to celebrate their birthdays. She highlighted that while one day may seem trivial, it can accumulate over time, leading to significant learning losses and increased absenteeism. A recent Department for Education analysis revealed that students are 55% more likely to miss school on their birthdays, which can hinder their academic performance and social development. Phillipson noted that last year saw an increase of five million classroom days, marking the most significant improvement in attendance in a decade. She stressed the importance of regular school attendance for building friendships, developing confidence, and participating in extracurricular activities, which contribute to overall well-being and academic success. To further support attendance efforts, schools will receive new software to help identify and address attendance issues promptly. Headteacher Caz Brasenell from Ark Kings Academy in Birmingham remarked that the new data tools will enable school leaders to quickly recognize attendance patterns and provide necessary support.
