A recent Ember report reveals that natural gas is losing its status as a primary transition fuel, with its global electricity share dropping from 23.9% in 2020 to 21.8% in 2025. Solar power's rapid growth, particularly in emerging economies, is reshaping the energy landscape.
- 01Natural gas's share in global electricity generation has decreased for five consecutive years, from 23.9% in 2020 to 21.8% in 2025.
- 02Solar power generation surged by 636 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025, compared to a marginal increase of 38 TWh for gas.
- 0361 out of 124 gas-producing economies have surpassed their peak gas generation levels, including the UK, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
- 04Emerging economies like India, China, and Brazil are meeting electricity demands with minimal gas reliance, indicating a shift towards renewables.
- 05Concerns over energy security and recent geopolitical disruptions are driving countries to favor domestic renewable energy sources over gas.

According to a new report by Ember, the role of natural gas as a transition fuel is diminishing globally as solar and wind energy take precedence. The report indicates that the share of gas in the global electricity mix has decreased from 23.9% in 2020 to 21.8% in 2025, marking the fifth consecutive year of decline. Notably, 61 of the 124 economies that generate electricity from gas have already reached their peak gas generation levels, including four G7 countries: the UK, Germany, Italy, and Japan. In contrast, solar power generation has expanded significantly, growing by 636 terawatt-hours in 2025, while gas saw a mere increase of 38 terawatt-hours. This trend is particularly evident in emerging economies, which accounted for 42% of global electricity demand in 2025 but relied little on gas. India's gas share has drastically dropped from 12.6% in 2010 to just 2.3% in 2025, reflecting a shift towards renewable energy. The report emphasizes that the global power sector may be nearing "peak gas," as clean energy technologies increasingly dominate electricity generation.
