As temperatures rise in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, the city has introduced a climate-smart solution to combat extreme heat. The Women’s Housing Trust has established the first cooling station in Kabir Nagar, which serves as a refuge during heatwaves. This innovative shelter maintains temperatures 7 to 8 degrees Celsius cooler than the outside, making it a vital resource for residents. The facility can accommodate 40 to 45 people at a time and is equipped with essential amenities such as drinking water, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and basic first aid. Solar panels installed on the shelter generate electricity to power fans, lights, and a misting system, while the roof is coated with solar reflective paint to deflect sunlight. Additionally, insulation beneath the roof prevents heat buildup. The cooling station employs traditional cooling techniques, including wet khus (vetiver) curtains that cool the air as it passes through and a wind tower that facilitates air circulation by pushing hot air out and drawing cooler air in. This initiative not only provides immediate relief from the heat but also exemplifies sustainable living practices in the face of climate change.
