Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, celebrated a decade of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), a key initiative for maternal health in India. Launched on June 9, 2016, PMSMA aims to provide free, quality antenatal care to pregnant women, significantly improving maternal and child health outcomes. Nadda emphasized that PMSMA has contributed to an impressive 86% decline in maternal mortality since 1990 and a 79% decline in under-five mortality rates. The initiative has facilitated over 7.5 crore antenatal check-ups and identified nearly 1.2 crore high-risk pregnancies, enhancing healthcare access through partnerships with over 9,000 private healthcare providers. Additionally, the Extended PMSMA (E-PMSMA) strategy was introduced to monitor high-risk pregnancies more closely. To commemorate this milestone, a special Rs 75 coin and a Rs 5 postal stamp were released, alongside awareness activities to promote the importance of antenatal care.
