Kia is recalling 6,264 vehicles due to a defect in the seatbelt system that could increase the risk of injury during a crash. The recall includes 4,367 Telluride Hybrid models and 1,897 gas-powered Telluride models manufactured between March 24 and May 12, 2026. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the driver seat belt emergency locking retractor (ELR) may malfunction, preventing the seat belt from extending when needed. This defect poses a significant safety risk, as an unavailable seatbelt increases the likelihood of injury to the driver in the event of a collision. The issue stems from an incorrect vehicle sensor installed by a supplier, leading to non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 209 regarding seat belt assemblies. Kia will notify affected vehicle owners by mailing letters on July 31, and they can have the faulty seat belt assembly replaced free of charge at Kia dealerships. Vehicle Identification Numbers for the recalled models will be searchable on NHTSA’s website starting June 16, 2026.
