The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing a severe internal crisis as a faction of its MPs, led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, openly supports the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This rebellion follows the party's electoral setbacks in West Bengal and has led to disputes over leadership positions and anti-defection laws. Dastidar claims that nearly 20 MPs have decided to back the NDA, which could position them above the two-thirds threshold often referenced in anti-defection discussions. The TMC leadership disputes this claim, asserting that any communication from Dastidar lacks official standing due to a recent appointment of Kalyan Banerjee as chief whip. Meanwhile, veteran MP Sukhendu Shekhar Ray has resigned from both the TMC and the Rajya Sabha, citing principles. The dissenting MPs are attempting to function as a separate bloc while avoiding immediate resignations from the TMC. Despite the turmoil, some TMC leaders, including Sougata Roy and Mahua Moitra, have publicly rejected the rebellion, emphasizing loyalty to the party. This internal conflict threatens the TMC's parliamentary strength and political authority, complicating its efforts to maintain unity within the opposition.
