Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has given the green light for a 250-MW solar power project with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on 850 acres of vacant defence land in Sitapur, India. This project is a pioneering effort by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to develop a large-scale solar facility that combines renewable energy generation with energy storage capabilities. NTPC Limited has been selected to implement the project through a competitive bidding process, aimed at achieving optimal energy pricing and cost savings for defence establishments. The MoD will collaborate closely with the Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army) and the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE) to ensure the project is completed on schedule. According to the defence ministry, this initiative represents a significant convergence of national security, energy security, technological innovation, and environmental sustainability. Once operational, the Sitapur solar power project is anticipated to become one of the most important renewable energy initiatives on defence land in India, serving as a model for future solar-plus-storage projects in the defence sector.
