The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in the Philippines is investigating the drowning deaths of Ateneo basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, as confirmed by Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla. In a press briefing, Remulla stated that the CIDG Aurora will compile a report on the incident, although it remains unclear whether foul play was involved. According to the Police Regional Office Central Luzon (PRO 3), the athletes were swimming when they were caught by a strong current and swept into deeper waters. Despite prompt medical assistance, both players were declared dead upon arrival at a medical facility. The authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigation to proceed. Additionally, they advised beachgoers to exercise caution during water activities, especially in areas with strong currents. Ateneo de Manila University has expressed condolences to the families of both players. Baterbonia, aged 19, had recently competed in the Palarong Pambansa finals and was set to join the Blue Eagles program, while 21-year-old Adili was a Nigerian foreign student athlete who participated in the UAAP Season 88 tournament last year.
