Two people were hit by gunfire outside the White House — the suspect and a possible bystander — and taken to hospital. The suspect is in critical condition and the second person in serious condition according to CBS News. President Donald Trump was safe and unharmed, PBS reported. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., posted on X: "Thank God @POTUS, @FLOTUS and everyone else at the White House are safe, and that no innocent bystanders were harmed. THANK YOU to the heroic @SecretService agents who acted quickly and decisively to neutralize the threat. Still, yet another attempt on the president’s life is something that should give us all pause — as well as a sense of urgency. The violence needs to stop. The chaos needs to end. The rule of law MUST prevail." Secret Service agents were apparently shot at and returned fire at 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. No agents were injured. U.S. law enforcement officials told Reuters that ths suspet approached a checkpoint near the White House and fired at officers. A U.S. law enforcement official told the outlet the scene was contained and no law enforcement personell were injured. Journalists and staff were briefly placed in lockdown as Trump remained inside the executive mansion. Newsmax correspondent Alana Austin reported on X that a Secret Service officer told her "the situation is now resolved and that no fatalities resulted from the incident." The Associated Press reported that journalists near the White House heard a series of gunshots and were instructed to shelter inside the press briefing room while Secret Service officers restricted movement. Reporter Chris Flanagan posted on X later Saturday: "Just released from lockdown at White House." FBI Director Kash Patel said on social media that officers were responding to reports of shots fired and that authorities would "update the public as we're able." The Secret Service said it was "aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW" and was "working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground." There were no immediate reports of injuries, and authorities had not publicly identified any suspect or provided details about what triggered the response. The Metropolitan Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
